All types of anti-mosquito products: Discover the GARDIGO range

At GARDIGO, you can find a comprehensive range of mosquito repellent products. Most people are keen to take action against mosquitoes in the home, as preventing irritating mosquito bites is a top priority. With GARDIGO’s professional insect killers and mosquito traps, you can catch these pests before they have a chance to bite.

Mosquito lamps used for deterrent purposes typically feature integrated UV lights to attract flying insects. High-voltage insect traps eliminate mosquitoes quickly and painlessly using an electric grid, while suction traps use a fan-driven airflow to draw insects into a collection container.

Glue traps offer a hygienic, odour-free way to catch mosquitoes, providing ideal protection for the hospitality sector and other environments where cleanliness is paramount. To prevent insects from entering your home in the first place, we also offer a variety of mosquito nets and fly screens. Additionally, our toxic-free electronic plug-ins use sound frequencies to make the environment unpleasant for biting female mosquitoes.

Mosquito Control: Comprehensive Guide to Protection and Prevention

Mosquitoes in Summer: A Seasonal Nuisance

As summer arrives and temperatures remain consistently high, mosquitoes emerge from their hiding places, often becoming a significant nuisance. A family trip to rural areas or forests can be quickly dampened by swarms of these insects. Most mosquito species are crepuscular or nocturnal, meaning they are most active during twilight and at night. Their high-pitched buzzing is particularly disruptive to sleep, and even a relaxed evening barbecue on the patio can be ruined by persistent biting.

In urban environments, mosquitoes find shelter in houses and garden sheds. They don't just wait for sunset to enter living spaces; many species fly close to the ground during the day, biting exposed veins around the legs, feet, and ankles. Mosquito bites leave itchy wheals (welts) on the skin caused by proteins deposited during the bite. This constant itching and the threat of being bitten often lead to significant sleep deprivation.

Mosquitoes on Holiday and Travel Risks

Relaxing in confined spaces like caravans, tents, boats, or hotel rooms with open windows is difficult when mosquitoes are present. The anxiety of being bitten often leads to irritability and poor sleep. When travelling abroad, particularly to tropical regions or parts of the Mediterranean, mosquitoes pose a higher risk as they can transmit serious diseases.

Malaria is a well-known risk in tropical climates. It is essential to seek professional medical advice regarding malaria prophylaxis before embarking on long-haul travel. Prevention remains the most effective form of protection against mosquito-borne illnesses.

Risks for Vulnerable Groups: Children, Elderly, and Allergy Sufferers

Beyond the irritation of itching, mosquitoes can transmit parasites, viruses, and bacteria. While the amount transferred in a single bite is often too low to cause infection in healthy adults, the risk is significantly higher for allergy sufferers, children, and the elderly with weaker immune systems. In Europe, cases of West Nile Virus (which can lead to meningitis) have been reported. Protecting these vulnerable groups and avoiding bites is a matter of health and safety.

Mosquito Activity in the Colder Months

Mosquito problems are not confined to summer. In mild, damp winters, mosquitoes remain active at temperatures as low as 6 °C. Below this threshold, they enter a state of overwintering (torpor).

Finland serves as a prime example of year-round infestation. Massive swarms develop in coniferous forests during summer and migrate to cities like Helsinki in autumn to find winter quarters. If the winter is mild, a "winter mosquito plague" can occur. In many European regions, mosquitoes survive in ideal conditions found in cellars and basements. Because people rarely expect bites in winter, the resulting irritation is often more frustrating.

Home Remedies for Mosquito Bites

If you have been bitten, several home remedies can provide relief:

  • Cooling: Applying ice followed by a small amount of vinegar can soothe the area.
  • Natural Extracts: Rubbing the bite with onion, lemon juice, or tea tree oil is a popular method to reduce swelling.
Important: Avoid scratching! Scratching is the primary cause of infected mosquito bites. If a bite becomes inflamed, use a suitable antiseptic/disinfectant.

Medical Treatments and Pharmacy Advice

Various over-the-counter creams and gels contain antihistamines to stop the itching. If a bite is already infected due to scratching, disinfectant treatments are necessary to prevent bacteria from entering the wound. We recommend consulting a pharmacist or doctor and ensuring your tetanus protection is up to date.

Myth-Busting: Why Do Mosquitoes Target Certain People?

The idea that mosquitoes prefer "sweet blood" is a myth. Mosquitoes are attracted to body odour, body temperature, and skin moisture. Every individual has a unique scent profile influenced by cholesterol and carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. Research suggests that certain ratios of these substances are either attractive or repellent to mosquitoes. Regular showering can help temporarily reduce these attractive cues.

Effective Mosquito Defence Measures

While some environmental treatments can be harmful to health and the ecosystem, we recommend targeted solutions like Gardigo insect repellent products. These are designed to effectively remove mosquitoes from bedrooms, caravans, hotels, and boats without damaging the environment.

UV Light Insect Killers – Indoor Use Only

UV insect lamps are often misunderstood. In many European countries, including Germany, these must not be used outdoors as they attract and kill beneficial insects indiscriminately. For maximum effectiveness indoors:

  • Switch the device on one hour before using the room.
  • Ensure no other light sources or human scents are present to distract the insects.
  • Once you enter the room, move the device to the hallway to lure insects away from your sleeping or living area.

Biology and Lifestyle of the Mosquito

Appearance:

Mosquitoes are delicate, two-winged insects, usually no larger than 15mm and weighing between 2 and 2.5mg. Females are generally larger than males and possess specialized mouthparts for piercing skin.

Feeding Habits:

The female mosquito is a "semi-parasite" that requires protein from blood to produce eggs. She uses a proboscis with two channels: one to inject anticoagulant saliva (which prevents blood clotting) and one to suck the blood. Males, however, do not bite; they feed on nectar and sugar-rich fluids.

Reproduction:

Mosquitoes thrive in warm, damp climates and lay eggs in standing water. To prevent breeding grounds, always cover water butts and clear clogged gutters or watering cans. The lifecycle progresses from egg to larva and pupa, eventually hatching into the adult (imago).
