Buyer’s Guide: Finding the Right Marten Repellent for Your Vehicle
Why Martens Enter the Engine Bay
These small animals use the engine compartment of your car as a sheltered hiding place. Problems arise primarily because they leave scent marks. If the vehicle is then parked in another marten's territory, the smell of a supposed rival can trigger intense aggression. The territorial battle is fought inside your engine bay; insulation and ignition cables are frequently damaged by sharp marten teeth. This leads to costly marten damage, which you should prevent, as insurance policies often only cover direct damage, leaving expensive consequential costs to the owner.
Marten Protection for Electric and Hybrid Vehicles: Why Prevention is Vital
Marten damage to electric cars is exceptionally expensive. Even with comprehensive insurance, consequential damages are often excluded. High-voltage cables cannot be repaired; if the main wiring harness in an EV is damaged by marten bites, the entire wiring loom must be replaced. Costs for materials and labour typically range between €3,000 and €4,000. In comparison, preventive measures are very affordable. For electric vehicles, we recommend our Marder-Frei Flex. Thanks to its flexible power supply, this device can be used in any vehicle.
Which Marten Protection Methods are Available?
GARDIGO marten repellent products use various functional principles to protect your vehicle:
- Marten repellent devices using high-frequency or ultrasonic sound.
- High-voltage marten protection based on the electric fence principle.
- Physical barriers against martens, such as marten mats or spikes placed under the engine bay to make entry uncomfortable.
Ultrasound or High Voltage? Expert Comparison: Which Marten Repellent is Right for My Car?
| Method | Advantages | Disadvantages | Suitability |
|---|---|---|---|
| High Voltage (Electric Shock) | Highly effective, immediate deterrence. Works even on martens "habituated" to noise. | More complex installation, higher initial cost. | Persistent cases and "repeat offenders". |
| Ultrasound | Easy and mobile installation, often battery-operated. More affordable. | Habituation effect possible. Sound propagation can be blocked by obstacles. | Prevention, occasional visitors, or in combination with other methods. |
Which Vehicles Need Marten Repellent Devices?
The applications are diverse. While most people think of their daily commute vehicle, other types of transport are also at risk and require protection. Consider:
- Classic cars and seasonal vehicles
- Caravans, motorhomes, and campers
- Trucks, delivery vans, and commercial vehicles
Many of these vehicles represent significant investments. Commercial and leisure vehicles are particularly at risk as they are frequently parked in different marten territories.
How to Install a Marten Repellent in a Car
Installation depends on how the device is powered:
- Connection to the Car Battery
- The car battery is an excellent power source. Our devices include cable lugs for easy installation. One lead is connected to the positive terminal and the other to the negative. Many devices can also be connected to Terminal 15 (ignition) of a CAN/BUS system, allowing them to switch off automatically when the engine is running. Electric cars also have a 12V battery for on-board electronics; however, some manufacturers advise against direct connections. In such cases, a battery-operated device is a better alternative.
- Battery-Operated Marten Protection
- Devices powered by standard batteries can be placed in various locations without complex wiring. These are a popular choice for those who prefer to avoid professional workshop installation costs.
Installation and Placement: Protecting the Engine Bay Correctly
1. Pre-treatment: Professional Engine Wash
If your car has already been visited by a marten, we urgently recommend a thorough engine wash before installation. This removes scent marks that would otherwise attract other martens and trigger aggressive territorial behaviour.
2. Correct Placement
When placing the device under the bonnet, ensure that sound waves (and light, if applicable) can propagate freely. Maintain sufficient distance from sound-absorbing insulation. High-voltage modules should be installed at the marten's likely entry points so they must come into contact with them.
3. Additional Protection Beneath the Vehicle
To make your vehicle as unattractive as possible, you can use a marten mat. Martens dislike walking on uneven, unstable surfaces. This method is particularly suitable for home use, where the mat can remain in your parking space.
Do Marten Repellents Make Annoying Noises? Not with Ultrasound!
Many devices use high-frequency tones within the human audible range where a marten's hearing is also very sensitive. Since engine bay insulation dampens sound effectively, this is usually not an issue. However, if you are sensitive to high tones, you should choose a device that works exclusively with ultrasonic waves (frequencies above 20 kHz). Humans cannot hear these, but martens find them very distressing.
Preventing the Habituation Effect
To prevent martens from getting used to a constant sound, GARDIGO devices use intervallic switching, which turns the sound off and on at intervals. Additionally, we offer devices with variable frequency or frequency modulation. These constantly change the pitch to prevent habituation.
For Persistent Cases: High-Voltage Electric Shock
High voltage is considered the most effective method for keeping martens out of the engine bay. These devices, which deliver a painful but non-lethal shock, work best in our experience. We especially recommend these if you have already suffered marten damage, as the animal will have already claimed your car as its territory. In such cases, ultrasound alone may not be enough to override the marten's strong territorial drive.
